The Jewish Federation of Ulster County and Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley are working together to conduct the third annual Headstone Restoration and clean up at Montrepose Cemetery, on Sunday, August 19, 2018 starting at 10 am.
Rick Mahler, co-chairperson of Congregation Emanuel’s social action committee, noted it is traditional near the Jewish New Year to visit the graves of loved ones, pay respect and to clean grave sites and headstones. “This activity is family friendly and a community service which unites all generations,” Mahler said. “All ages are welcome to come and participate and no experience is required. Training will be provided on how to safely clean headstones,” Mahler went on to say.
Participants will be provided cleaning solutions but are advised to come in work clothes and bring rubber gloves, eye protection, natural or synthetic bristle brushes, and two sponges. In addition, those attending should bring a wooden paint stirrer or plastic scraper to remove moss, one or more gallons of clean water, paper towels and a bag lunch for an after clean up picnic.
The cemetery is located at 75 Montrepose Avenue in Kingston. Pre-registration is requested. To sign up or for further information, please contact either Rick Mahler at 845-901-0988 or Arlene Gould from the Jewish Federation at 845-338-8131.
