Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley

Third Installment of the 2020 Shabbaton Trip Diary:
Saturday, February 15, 2020
We woke up pretty early this morning! Breakfast at 7:45am- eggs, fruit, waffles, cereal, bagels, cheese, and croissants. Once we were well-fed, we settled into Shabbat morning services in the rental. The confirmands led most of the service. Rabbi’s nephew Darien joined us for tefillot.

As our prayers concluded we left the house and took a brisk morning walk. After 30 minutes we arrived at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where we were joined by another one of Rabbi’s nephews, Harrison. The Museum was powerful. We took time to recognize how slavery, specifically the enslavement of African peoples, has been part of the history and story of the United States of America since before the founding of the nation. The individual stories we witnessed were woven together and expressed the magnitude of institutional racism from a very deep and intense place. This is a reality that we all as Americans must own and reckon with. It is certainly very impactful and important for us as Jews.

Our discussions tied into the principles of Faith we had spoken about in the car ride and helped prepare us for visit to the Our discussions prepared is for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum we will visit tomorrow.

On Friday morning, February 14th, our annual confirmation Shabbaton trip began. Rabbi Yael and five members of her confirmation class, along with Rebbetzer Michael Freedman, left Kingston for Washington, DC. Check out the first installment of trip diary below!
CEHV confirmation trip 5780
First installment-

Friday, February 14, 2020

We left synagogue this morning at 9 AM. The trip down was great. It was a little long, but we filled it with joy and even a bit of learning.
We played 21 questions, talked and caught up, and competed in the car alphabet game. It was an intense competition. Several of us got stuck in the letter “Q” but Aden pulled ahead and won.

As our shabbaton began to unfold, we spoke about what the confirmation teachings would be this year. Each of the students will be shaping their own “This I Believe” for Shavuot. We then engaged in an exercise of creating an initial group consensus for our 13 principles of faith. Later on during the trip we compared Maimonides’ 13 principles of faiths and recognized the overlaps and divergences.
Of course there was music, and chatting, and snoozing!
We arrived in DC at 3:45.

We enjoyed Shabbat dinner at our VRBO (rental) townhouse, and are leaving for Shabbat service at Bet Mishpachah
Shabbat Shalom.

Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley

Second Installment of the 2020 Shabbaton Trip Diary:
Friday, February 14, 2020, PM

Shabbat dinner: vegetable lasagna and mock Kung Pow chicken. We settled into our rented townhouse: a former CIA safe house in the 60’s and 70’s that was later a George Washington University fraternity house. The present owners totally renovated the space into an elegant rental space with three wings. Isabella and Naava have one section, Aden, Ian, & Micah share the second area, and Rabbi and Michael are occupying the final wing. We gathered around the table and Ian lit the Shabbat candles, Bella chanted the kiddish, Micah led hand washing, and Aden led the motzi. The dinner was delicious. We practiced and shared creative chopstick techniques. We explored our experiences of travel: how we observe and become part of what is around us. Earlier we noticed several people living on the streets of DC as we travelled through different neighborhoods on our way to our lovely and upscale rental. We discussed what that meant. We closed our meal and benched Birkat ha-mazon (recited the prayers that end meals). We all cleaned up and packaged a few portions that we will offer to those living on the streets in DC on our way to services. The confirmands (confirmation class students) took some time together before we leave for Shabbat services at Beit Mishpacha (wwwbetmish.org). שבת שלום
