Committees, Programs, & Events


  • Audacious Hospitality: Works to ensure the congregation is warm and accessible to all, with a strong emphasis on welcoming historically marginalized groups, including Jews of Color, Jews by Choice, LGBTQ Jews, disabled Jews, and those who feel distanced, exclude, or unwelcome in Jewish spaces. 
  • Budget/Finance: Manages the finances and budget of CEHV. Subcommittee on Investments manages investment decisions.
  • Caring: Provides food, support, and organizes shiva calls for members who are sick, have passed or lost close family members.
  • House:  Manages all aspects of our building’s upkeep and use.
  • Cemetery: Oversees cemetery upkeep, policy, and purchase of burial plots.
  • Fundraising: Organizes Broadway Voices and the annual Gala- the CEHV’s two largest fundraising events.  
  • Membership/Welcoming: Works to organize greeters at services, events, and holidays as well as welcoming new members.
  • Policy (ad hoc): Creates and updates CEHV policies on an as-needed basis. 
  • Outreach: Manages website, social media, and signage.
  • Parent Teacher Organization: Supports Religious School director and teachers by providing supplies and volunteers for and helping to plan and execute school events
  • Security: Manages security concerns of the congregation.
  • Spiritual Practices: Supports clergy around all holidays, including organizing aliyahs and weekly Torah readers. Also creates policy around issues related to Jewish religious and spiritual observances.
  • Strategic and Long-Term Planning: This committee created a strategic plan for the synagogue that they are now in the process of implementing. This plan will help CEHV plan for the next 50 years thoughtfully and comprehensively. 
  • Sisterhood: Women’s organization that fundraises and sponsors activities throughout the year. The longest running committee in the history of CEHV- over 150 years!
  • Brotherhood: Men’s organization who sponsor activities throughout the year.  
  • Social Action: Organizes Social Action activities including the warming center, Christmas Feast for the Kingston community, and other outreach.

Events & Programming

  • Rainbow Shabbat- Plans our (first) annual Rainbow Shabbat, an evening for centering, honoring, and affirming lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer Jews. Also plans political, social, and artistic events.
  • Rosh Chodesh- Explore history, contemporary issues, ritual, politics, spirituality, social justice, and creative expression in a monthly format designed to empower and elevate all those who identify as women or gender-nonconforming.
  • Broadway Voices- Annual fundraiser featuring theater/film stars who create an incredible performance for our community.
  • Mishloach Manot- Annual Purim event where congregants are secretly matched up and provide each other with baskets of sweetness, as well as donating essential items to families in need. 
  • Shabbat Blessings- Provides challah, Shabbat candles, and other essential items for Jewish people at all local hospitals.
  • Purim Spiel- Annual musical Purim play written, composed, directed, and performed by members of our congregations.
  • Second Night Seder- Congregation gathers together for a beautiful community seder led by Rabbi Yael Romer. 
  • Women’s Seder- A Passover seder for the women of the congregation and community, designed to center women's roles in Jewish history
  • SCRIP- Gift cards to all of your favorite local grocery stores are available to purchase at no extra cost with a small percentage supporting the synagogue.
  • Bingo- Held (most) every Wednesday, bingo provides recreational opportunities for the greater Kingston community as well as low-cost food options. Volunteers are always needed!
  • Sponsored Onegs- Plans and coordinates sponsored Onegs (food and beverages following weekly services).
